The role of age

TESS

Age plays an important role in the way in which depression expresses itself.

Elderly people

Many elderly people suddenly seem as though they are unable to cope with the lifestyle they are accustomed to. This can make them seem senile. There are many physical symptoms which are linked to depression in elderly people. These include weight or appetite changes, constipation, and sleeping problems. There are often changes in the intensity of the illness from morning to evening. These are called morning pains and evening relief. You should keep a watchful eye if symptoms from a previous period of depression reappear. The person will often dismiss the idea of a serious illness in order to avoid a visit to the doctor.

Young people

Depression in young people often causes them to become very isolated. Isolation increases the risk of suicide. They may also lack the energy to keep up at school. Their grades can suddenly fall. They can also lose interest in their leisure activities.

Most doctors often refer young people with depression for treatment to a psychiatrist.

Adults

Depression in adults is often characterized by:

  • viewing everything very pessimistically
  • having thoughts which revolve around the dark side of life
  • trying to pretend that everything is wonderful
  • not enjoying daily chores
  • criticizing themselves inappropriately

Sexual symptoms

Depression in adults can also be apparent through their:

  • love life being dull and their interest in sex disappearing
  • their spouse suddenly feeling sexually ignored

You should be very aware of changes in your partner's interest in sex. It is important that you do not ignore the illness because of a bruised ego or because you feel ignored or rejected.
